How mobile phones affect the lives of every individual?

Mobile Phone
Mobile Phones are one of the most used device for communication nowadays many people cant live without it. We can easily contact and communicate with our loved ones in the far places. We can also get
any replies in an instant either through texts or calls.

I can't imagine life without cellular phones. As I can remember those days when this device is not yet as popular as today, we cant easily contact our loved ones and know there conditions, feelings and safety. We do not have any choice but to travel or send a letter through snail mail for them to know if we missed them, hate them or love them. But now just a push on the Send or Call button it will instantly send the messages or dial the person's number and in a second you are conversing with them.

Here in the Philippines, almost all individuals have already their cellular phones. It seems that if you dont have one, you are in an empty space alone, you are apart from the society. Mobile phone is one of the powerful tool that Filipinos use to express their ideas, opinions and get information about the different happenings in their society.

Philippines is the Texting Capital in the World
Based on the research that I made regarding the use of mobile phone in the Philippines, it stated that :

According to a 2009 report, Pinoys send an average of 600 text messages per month, or about 40 percent more than their US counterparts. Smartphone adoption has been on the rise in the country, but studies have noted that SMS remains to be the top activity performed using these high-powered phones.

It’s no wonder therefore that we earned — and  own — the distinction as the “Texting Capital of the World.”

Since mobile phone is one of the effective means of communication, I will give some advantages and disadvantages of using it.

Here are some advantages of using mobile phones:

  1. It is easy to communicate with other people and get an instant reply either through SMS (Short Message Service) or via call.
  2. It is a handy device. You can just place it inside your pocket or bag.
  3. Telephone companies offer unlimited texts and call to their subscribers so it is affordable on the consumer's part.
  4. Many mobile phones are affordable nowadays that even we can buy those gadgets as a gift to our loved ones.
  5. It can boost self-confidence because as expensive your gadget is the more you are IN on the trend and up-to-date.

The following are some disadvantages of using mobile phone:

  1. The first one that I can think of is the health problems associated with it.
  2. Instead of focusing on some important duties and responsibilities, we sometimes take almost all of the time checking text messages or phone calls.
  3. It is one cause of accident. Some careless and misbehaved drivers does not know the meaning of "Don't Text and Drive" policy. They do not know that if they are on the street, it means their priority is driving and to focus on the road not "texting".
  4. It can cause distraction on some important gatherings or events. Some people forgot to turn-off their mobile phones and it is so annoying to hear a phone ringing while  in a middle of business meetings , weddings and other gatherings especially on the solemn part of such event.
  5. Cell phones may dehumanize the dynamics of human contact. Some people may not know how to interact in real life anymore, preferring the safety and comfort of a well-timed SMS.

What are the health problems of using cellphones?

Health risk of using mobile phone
Sometimes we overlook the risk of using mobile phones or cellphones because we are more focused on what it brings to us. We do not know that every time we use our mobile phone our health is at risks. According to the National Cancer Institute: A recent study showed that when people used a cell phone for 50 minutes, brain tissues on the same side of the head as the phone’s antenna metabolized more glucose than did tissues on the opposite side of the brain .
There are three main reasons why people are concerned that cell phones (also known as “wireless” or “mobile” telephones) might have the potential to cause certain types of cancer or other health problems:
  • Cell phones emit radiofrequency energy (radio waves), a form of non-ionizing radiation. Tissues nearest to where the phone is held can absorb this energy.
  • The number of cell phone users has increased rapidly. As of 2010, there were more than 303 million subscribers to cell phone service in the United States, according to the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association. This is a nearly threefold increase from the 110 million users in 2000. Globally, the number of cell phone subscriptions is estimated by the International Telecommunications Union to be 5 billion.
  • Over time, the number of cell phone calls per day, the length of each call, and the amount of time people use cell phones have increased. Cell phone technology has also undergone substantial changes.

Dont let your child use a Cellphone.
In theory, children have the potential to be at greater risk than adults for developing brain cancer from cell phones. Their nervous systems are still developing and therefore more vulnerable to factors that may cause cancer. Their heads are smaller than those of adults and therefore have a greater proportional exposure to the field of radiofrequency radiation that is emitted by cell phones. And children have the potential of accumulating more years of cell phone exposure than adults do.

Wireless Phone Use Increases Risk of Malignant Brain Tumor

As I have researched more on the health problems brought by mobile phones to its users, I found this article stated that On the latest analysis, published online ahead of print in October, was performed by Dr. Lennart Hardell, a professor of oncology at University of Örebro in Sweden, and statistician Michael Carlberg from the same University.

The pair looked at data from two previous case-controlled studies on Swedish patients diagnosed with malignant brain tumors during the periods of 1997-2003 and 2007-2009.

The patients were between the ages of 18 and 80 years old at the time of their diagnosis. Cell phone use was ascertained via questionnaires. (Use of a hands-free device counted as non-exposure.) In all, nearly 1,500 brain cancer patients were included, along with 3,530 cancer-free controls.

Using regression analysis, adjusted for gender, age, year of diagnosis, and socioeconomic index, the odds of developing a malignant and highly lethal brain cancer called glioma rose concurrently with increased cell phone use.

The more hours spent with a cell phone pressed to their ear, and the more years they’d spent using a mobile phone, the higher the odds were.

  • Those who logged the most amount of hours on their cell phones were twice as likely to develop glioma compared to those who used them the least
  • Those who used either a cell phone or cordless house phone for more than 25 years had triple the risk of glioma, compared to those who had used wireless telephones for less than one year

"If we cant stop using our mobile phone, atleast limit the use of it"

With our increasing need to stay connected, many of us are forgetting about the possible dangers of mobile phones. So we better be conscious when using our mobile phones because the longest we are on the phone the more it gives us risks for possible health problem. Since we cant get rid of using mobile phones totally atleast we can just limit the use of it to also limit the risk of health problems that we can get.
